Mamta Mohandas — singer, actor, model and the heart-throb of south cinema — is back with a bang. She was superb as Ayesha in the hit Malayalam film Anwar, opposite Prithviraj. Her look in the film and the peppy number she crooned for it, have made her hot property in Kerala, where she has signed four new films. In an exclusive interview with BT, Mamta talks about her movies, and determination in fighting Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Your new look with short hair has become the talk of the town. You are looking even more beautiful.
It makes me feel reborn. I'm sporting this new look as I'm a cancer survivor. I sported this look in the last song of Anwar, a song that I have also sung. Not many people noticed it, as I had worn wigs for some other scenes in the film.
So was it a major upheaval in your life that you came out of smiling?
I didn't over-react and took the diagnosis bravely. The tough part is over; now I have to fight it. For chemotherapy and radiation, I had to cut my hair. I always wanted to cut my hair and sport a new look. Earlier this year, I was in New York, where I got a tattoo done on my upper arm that says 'Om Sri Ganeshaya Nama', which indicates I'm positive about life.
Anwar is a hit and you are now hot property in Malayalam cinema. You've proved that you are a fine performer and have a great voice.
After Passenger, it was a kind of rebirth for me as Ayesha of Anwar — a change in look and a modern, edgy character. It also gave me a break as a singer. I'm now doing a music video for Prithviraj's Thriller. In another film, Mohabbath, I'm singing a classical song and making a special appearance with Hariharan. At the moment, I have signed up to do four films in Malayalam.
Your birthday's on Sunday. What are your plans?
It's going to be a very special birthday for me. I'm doing a charity dream flight accompanying 430 underprivileged children who've never flown in a plane. I will have the opportunity to cut my birthday cake on the flight with these children. It's Children's Day in every sense. |
