Several doubts are being raised as to why Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy had rejected 129 resignations of the MLA and why he had taken so much time to do so.
According to the Speaker, he had consulted all the legal experts, including Advocate General and also the Supreme Court legal luminaries and rejected the resignations, which were against the assembly rules, regulations and procedures.
What do the rules say? According to the Legislature officials, the MLA’s resignation letter should have only one line saying that he or she is quitting his assembly membership and seeking that it be accepted with immediate effect. It should not have any conditions or reasons for the same.
However, almost all the MLAs, in their resignations, have cited reasons and conditions. While Telangana MLAs said they were resigning because the Centre had gone back on the promise of delivering separate statehood for Telangana; while Seemandhra MLAs said they were resigning in protest against union home minister P Chidambaram’s statement beginning the process for Telangana state. Because of these riders, the Speaker rejected the applications.
