Reference: VISAKHAPATNAM: The hopes of the port city, considered to be the next destination of IT industry in the State after Hyderabad but failed to get the expected boost due to global meltdown and a few other reasons, were revived when a team from IBM began a two-day visit on Tuesday. The 10-member team headed by its Global Strategy Director Amanda Garland visited Andhra and GITAM universities and later went to the IT Park at Rushikonda on the city outskirts and even visited Kenexa and other IT companies. Later in the evening, the team met Collector J. Syamala Rao. The IBM team did not interact with the press. The universities only explained to the team members their academic activities and infrastructure facilities. Indications were that the team was here to explore the possibility of establishing a global centre and, going by the enquires they made, it was keen to understand the quality and quantity of HR, the quality of students, infrastructure, connectivity, power, IT facilities and other related facilities. At Andhra University, Vice-Chancellor B. Satyanarayana, Registrar P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy and other professors explained to the IBM team the facilities, academic activities through a power point presentation. The IBM team visited some departments of AU College of Engineering. Later, the team went to GITAM University where some officials of the Software Technology Parks of India, including its Deputy Director A.K. Dubey, were also present. Vice-Chancellor G. Subramanyam told the team that the university was giving high priority to train qualitative human resource in the field of computer science and information technology. GITAM University already signed an MoU with IBM Company to set up Centre for Excellence on the campus. Pro Vice-Chancellor D. Harinarayana, Institute of International Business Director V.K. Kumar, Institute of Technology Principal D. Prasada Rao, Institute of Management K. Siva Rama Krishna and other senior faculty members participated in the meeting. Later, the IBM team visited the GITAM campus to know the infrastructural facilities and academic atmosphere on the campus.
