Mulund resident Satish Purushottam Sawant is still shaken by the March 21 incident, in which he and his family narrowly escaped death in their brand new Tata Nano. If there's anything that rankles the Sawants even more, it's the absence of an apology from Tata Motors.

"But for a formal 'we regret the inconvenience', in its letter to us, Tata Motors has not apologised to us verbally or in writing. They [Tata], have insulted us," Sawant said. Tata Motors has offered to compensate the Sawants with a replacement or a refund of the entire amount paid for the burnt car, but the Sawants are not pleased.

"My five-year-old son is so traumatised that he is afraid to get into any car. Can Tata compensate me for this?

They were quick to tow away the charred car and take it into their custody. Why are they still silent about the cause of the fire? I am told that experts from Tata are studying the exact cause," Sawant said.

"Deepankar Tiwari, regional manager (west) of Passenger Car Business Unit, Tata Motors trivialised the incident by telling me about how he had fallen off a bicycle when he was a kid and then later rode it, overcoming his fear! Then, Tata Motors' official, Amit Joshi, told me that it was a pre-production car, which Concorde Motors was not supposed to sell to any customer," said an agitated Sawant.

According to the vehicle's Acknowledgement Delivery Note, the year of manufacture has been shown as 2009, but Tata's spokesperson, Deba-shish Ray, had said that the car was actually manufactured in 2008.

"It must also be probed how and why Tata and Concorde gave delivery of a defective car. I want the entire incident to be investigated and criminal action taken against officials of Tata Motors and Concorde," Sawant said.

Better Buy an Auto , instead of a Nano . January , when I was in Bangalore . I got a chance to check out Nano .. its does not really feel safe , body sounded like a coke Tin can .. .. every thing seemed Leggoed .. ..




maybe I should not belittle a marvel .. ...

This is a cause of concern.. Its not just one off case, hope they will resolve very quickly..

So far have been reported three cases of ignited Tata Nano, the cause being a fault in the steering column. It remains to be seen whether the last case, which already had enough impact in the media in India, will lead to a recall to services of $ 2,500 cars.

BS II, BS III and BS IV are the India mandatory norms for Nitrogen Oxides, Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide and particulates. These norms are substantially aligned with the European norms Euro II, Euro III and Euro IV; the main difference is that the peak speed in the extra urban driving cycle is 90 km/h in India and 120 km/h in Europe.

Being a TATA group pyaan, i couldn't digest this news. Its a big blow on ratan tata. but they should get the punishment if ut is proven some thing is wrong with the design.

3:00 pm: Satish Sawant, an insurance agent, collected his brand new Nano from a showroom in Prabhadevi, and headed home, dreaming of showing off his first car to his family at LIC Colony, Mulund (W).

3:45 pm: The car burst into flames at Eastern Express Highway. Sawant jumped to safety.

Sawant had spent Rs 2.4 lakh on the silver Nano (MH03 AW 913), which he had got fitted with an A/C and a power steering.

As Sawant cannot drive, the Concorde Motors showroom provided him with a driver to take him home safely.

There was not much afternoon traffic on the Eastern Express Highway, it being a Sunday afternoon. Sawant managed to cross Bhandup in less than 40 minutes. Around 3:45 pm, he reached Navghar Signal on the Eastern Express Highway. Suddenly, a motorcycle overtook him, signalling him to look behind.

As he turned to see what the biker was pointing at, he was alarmed to see the rear of the car in flames.

Sawant and the driver leapt out of the burning car. In no time, the car was engulfed in flames. Even a tree on the side of the highway was singed.

A shaken Sawant said, "I have no idea what happened. A motorcycle rider overtook me and told me that the vehicle was on fire. The engine was behind me and I did not realise that the car was on fire," said Sawant.

A fire tender rushed to the scene and doused the fire. The Navghar police (Mulund E) have registered a case yesterday evening.
