Fubar:it can be due to lot of issues, badly designed apps, bad HBA, buggy HBA drivers, SAN port acting up, a highly IO intense server SAN port shared with number of servers etc etc, its a pain to anaylize these kind of issues as number of factors are involved, it can take from few hrs to sometimes days for a permanent resolution

bro, will have to strongly disagree on this, for any big app the IO performance is critical, so for the same reason 95% of them are on external subsystem, believe me that aix/hpux/solaris are miles ahead when handling the SAN/NAS operations, this is one of the reason linux is not perferred...probably 75% of current oracle databases you came across might be on linux

if you meant there are no future deployments of oracle on AIX/hpux u r wrong, virtualization on HPUX isn't good, probably oracle guarantees performance on OEL as they can get the support contracts, thats a given with any big vendor...I was involved in the first RAC implmentation at the client back in 2004/5, during the POC oracle tried to push lot of there stuff into the environment which we disagree

As oracle dba I rate RHEL/OEL first best choice just for the ease of use and right up there performance, security, and reliability wise. Oracle sort of double guarantees anything that runs on OEL(RHEL) and probably soon on SUN solaris sparc 10s. I worked on very few of AIX, HP_UX and right now I don't find them anywhere even to get a glimpse of them.. very recently we ran into HP-UX firmware issues with our data virtualization platforms.. everything went down for 2 days 2 times.. their customer support sucks.. Again system admin point of view naku teliyadu .. nenu pure ORACLE dba point of view, current and future aspects quote chestunnaa.. past I just don't care

until early 2008 I was unix admin not anymore...
I think i worked with most of the big apps available in the industry, baan/sap/oracle RAC/informatica/tibco/webspheres/ATG dynamo as far as I remember, I was involved in few pilots for oracle/sap on linux so I can talk little abotu linux too, frm my experience as a system admin I can rate AIX as the best followed by HPUX and solaris...solaris 9 was one of the worst solaris I have worked with, lot of memory leaks and the sparcs used to reboot like crap...the problem with linux is, its bad at the infrastructure, the CLuster software is the crapiest I have worked with, IBM/HP tried to push for linux to run on their pseries/parisc servers but its failure, so u end of using crappy intel based hardware so u end having multiple vendors supporting a box which is hassle in infrastructure support, AIX has some cool features like GLVM(wherein u can basically sync metro/continental LVMs), virtualization(LPARS) is the best...

Strongly disagree.. Linux and solaris stands right up there in performance and reliability ..I am saying in oracle dba's point of view.. If you have something that runs well on HP-UX and AIX, different story. 20 yrs ga work avutunnai more reliable ante no.. old is old.. why pay more bucks for something least desirable if something else can provide the same for cheap price.. time to move on.. The only reason people would not want to migrate is .. everything is up and running well for years .. just don't touch it.. It is pain to migrate gigantic data across platforms, takes lot of money, time, resources, and nobody likes it..

pda babai, I am not sure wut u saying bro, are u telling me AIX, HP-UX is crappy platforms bcoz it aint userfriendly, take time out and give a reading on wut it can do, bottomline performance/reliability is wut the customers look for, I work for a client which has 35PB of data and 90% of there servers are HPUX, most of the financial/banking sectors are on AIX, HPUX and solaris, linux is being considered as a cheap solution and customers want it on there development environment not prod
