Slowly but surely, Nara Lokesh is stepping into the shoes of his father and the Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu. The shy industrialist has now started playing a more active role in the party affairs. In the recently held brain storming session of the party, Lokesh made power point presentations on the strategies to be adopted by the party to expand its support base ahead of the 2014 general elections. Now, the latest buzz doing rounds in the TDP circles is that he would take over the responsibility of preparing the party's poll manifesto. Lokesh has been extensively interacting with the party leaders, particularly the youth, and has been going into various aspects that need to be incorporated into the manifesto. The senior party leaders have told that since backward classes have been the traditional support base of the party, the manifesto should address their concerns and contain wide range of promises for them. Lokesh was credited with contributing some inputs for the 2009 election manifesto. The promise of direct cash transfer scheme was said to be his brain child. This time around, he will completely take over the task of manifesto preparation and offer something new for the youth as the party is keen on attracting the first-time voters. It will be a please-all manifesto, promising all things to all sections of society. The party sources say that he is gearing up for district tours from next month. It is also said that he is keen on taking a plunge into electoral politics. There is a talk in TDP circles that he is even scouting for an ideal Lok Sabha constituency to contest in the coming general elections. Though there were reports earlier that he might test his electoral fortunes from Sherlingampally Assembly constituency in Ranga Reddy, it is now said that in the changed political dynamics he is keen on entering Lok Sabha. However, there is no official confirmation for his electoral ambitions. The 32 year old Lokesh, a Stanford Management Graduate, has been playing an active role in the party for some time now. It is clear that Chandrababu is keen on grooming his son to take over the mantle in due course. Since its inception in 1982 on the plank of “Telugu Pride”, the TDP has been a close-knit, family-driven organisation. Though there is no immediate need now for Naidu to declare his heir, the talk about grooming his son to step into his shoes is gaining momentum in the party which is desperately looking for a dash of youth to infuse a new sense of hope among the despondent cadre. However, a section of party leaders feel that Lokesh, though educated abroad and gifted with managerial skills, lacks mass appeal.
