In the end, Presti made the best of an impossible situation: Despite two years left on George's deal, he didn't want a trade demand hanging over his franchise. Still, he'd never have more leverage to trade George than he did late Friday night, when there were no limits to the Clippers' desperation to land George and Leonard in one dramatic swoop.
In a wild night of negotiations, Presti leveraged the Clippers and Raptors off each other, preying on the uncertainties of what the other might be willing to give Oklahoma City for the chance to secure Leonard and George -- and perhaps the inside track on a championship.
In the end, the Clippers' reservoir of draft picks and young players -- cultivated in the Blake Griffin trade and built on in the flipping of Tobias Harris to Philadelphia -- gave the Thunder a return that the Raptors couldn't match in trade talks, league sources said.
Toronto's pressure was unmistakable: Allow George to get traded to the Clippers and risk Leonard walking into Staples Center arm-and-arm with George to take on James and Davis. This was a high-stakes game playing out across the league Friday night, with the future balance of power hanging.
From the time that Leonard demanded his trade in San Antonio in 2018, the Clippers believed that they had to get him. Here was a top-five player with Southern California roots whose personality maybe didn't fit with the bright lights and scrutiny that comes with life as a Laker. The Clippers withstood several significant obstacles on the way to a free-agent commitment, including Leonard's title with the Raptors and the Lakers' acquisition of Davis.
When it was time to make a decision on sacrificing the franchise's long-term future with a historic haul of draft picks, Ballmer felt he had no choice. Leonard wanted George, and the Clippers paid an unprecedented price in assets. In the minds of the Clippers' decision-makers, they were delivering a massive return of assets to Oklahoma City for George and Leonard. Without George, they were losing Leonard to the Lakers, sources said.
Now Staples Center is the NBA's epicenter, and the Clippers can walk Leonard and George into downtown Los Angeles to stand shoulder to shoulder with James and Davis. The wildest story on the wildest night of free agency.

Had Presti been able to strike a deal for George with the Raptors -- and Leonard was willing to stay -- George was believed to be willing to join the Raptors too, sources said. Presti had been willing to pursue a package of Russell Westbrook and George to the Raptors, but no talks ever gained traction, sources said. Ujiri and Raptors GM Bobby Webster had no ability, nor inclination to counter the Clippers offer with a multitude of first-round picks into the middle of the next decade, league sources said.
The Raptors could have been looking at adding Westbrook, with four years and $171 million left on his deal, and George to a team that Leonard still might have parted ways with. Toronto extended itself as far as it could for Leonard, but Ujiri could never be sure that the Thunder even wanted to do a deal with them -- and perhaps were just using the Raptors to squeeze more out of the Clippers.
Ujiri had delivered Leonard everything that he wanted in a franchise: leadership, trust, championship talent and a medical partnership that preserved and prepared his body. What Ujiri couldn't give Leonard was out of his control: geography, weather and a chance to return to his Southern California roots.

Yes, clippers have a full roster. They simply swapped Danillo Gallinari and Tobias Harris for Kawahi and Paul George. They even have Mo Harkless and Rodney Mcgruder as a bonus from Riley's desperation.
Riley had to waive a player that was going to be claimed after the regular season ended to get under the luxury tax...this player was going to be in-eligible to play in the play-offs...so he had to waive a very good young player...and he waived Rodney Mcgruder...clippers claimed him and he could not play for them in the play-offs...he is going to be crucial for their defense in their title contention. |

Clippers still have good young players....they are loaded. Shamet and Zubac are really good young players. Mcgruder, Harkless, Lou Williams, Pat Beverley and Montrel Harrel are solid veterans.
Landry Shamet, Jerome Robinson, Sindarius Thornwell, Zubac...all drafted in last 2 years.
Riley gaadi desperation ni baaga cash chesukuni Harkless, Mcgruder and 1st round laagesaaru.

2020 free agent class is very bad...nobody is leaving cap space for cap space. Kniks used up 80 M in cap signing Wayne Ellington, Bobby Portis, Taj Gibson and Julius Randle on 2 year deals. Most of the GMs learnt from their 2016 mistake. There haven't been crazy bad deals.

Denver messed that up...he will probably be worth close to that when the time comes next year...but they dont have to offer it an year in advance...they could have used up the cap space first next year and then signed him to that deal. Ippudu they entered salary cap hell for the next 5 years...its a bad sign entering salary cap hell in year 1 of becoming a potential contender. |

It is obviously a gut punch for the New York Knicks, who traded their own franchise player to unlock cap space -- and, sure, for lots of other reasons -- and have no major player to spend it on. Their buffoonish owner, James Dolan, took the unusual and bombastic step of boasting during a radio interview in the middle of the season about how the Knicks would "have a very successful offseason when it comes to free agents" -- how players and their representatives had told them so.
Perhaps when you have almost zero record of competent team-building over two decades, you should hold off on the premature braggadocio. Just a thought. Three years ago, the Brooklyn Nets were as dead as any NBA team has ever been. They had just wrapped a 21-win 2015-16 season. They had no young players of consequence. They had few draft assets; the Boston Celtics owned most of them through 2019 thanks to a trade that was and is considered one of the great heists in basketball history.
Unless free agency guts the Toronto Raptors, the Nets with Durant recovering from an Achilles tear will probably enter next season in the second tier of Eastern Conference playoff teams -- ironically, right next to the Celtics, who pillaged the Nets in that 2013 Paul Pierce/Kevin Garnett trade only to watch Brooklyn swipe a good chunk of their carefully planned rebuild today.
Irving is significantly better than D'Angelo Russell, but he does not by himself elevate a 42-win team into title contention. The hope is that the mega-leap comes with Durant's return in 2020-21. And it is a hope, not a lock. Durant might never be the same player again. We all hope he is, because Durant before crumpling to the court in Game 5 of the NBA Finals was on pace to be (at worst) one of the 10 greatest players ever -- with an outside shot at breaking the all-time scoring record.
We just don't know. If Durant is 90 percent of his old self, a four-year max deal that might cap out the Nets going forward will be good value. If he's 70 or 75 percent or whatever figure you'd like to attach to "doesn't look the same," there is a downside to this contract that is unpleasant to think about. But even if he hits that 90 percent, it is hard to know what that missing 10 percent represents -- if it is the difference between an All-NBA player and a guy who can function as the best player on a championship team.
Being 7-feet tall with an untouchable feathery jump shot helps. That alone will make Durant a fun pick-and-roll partner for Irving, the way he was with Stephen Curry for three seasons -- only the Nets figure to lean on that action more than the Warriors did. Ever since the rumblings about Durant and Irving joining forces burbled up, there has been noise within league circles that perhaps they will not fit all that well together -- that they will suffer from the "only one ball" problem.
Nah. They are both elite shooters who carry immense value away from the ball. The defining quality of Durant's on-court career is his ability to play alongside superstar teammates without sacrificing any of what makes him great or taking away anything that makes those teammates great. He is in some stylistic ways -- namely, time spent controlling the ball and the offense -- the greatest second option of all time.
Joining with a ball-dominant point guard dashes any dreams of seeing Durant fully unleashed as the undisputed No. 1 option. There will be no permanent Slim Reaper posting 33-9-9 lines over full seasons. Working with Irving might resemble his partnership with Russell Westbrook on the Oklahoma City Thunder. And that's fine. Durant as he recovers from traumatic injury and ages into his 30s will need a younger All-Star to carry chunks of the offense the way LeBron James needed Irving to win a title with the Cleveland Cavaliers. They will form a lethal, switch-proof, pick-and-roll combination that works both ways: Durant screening for Irving, and vice versa. Remember: Irving has a long history working that action with James. |

Looks like Sixers will sign Tobias Harris close to a 5 year max deal.
Jimmy Butler's free agency is wide open...he will be a good fit with the Lakers. Sixers, Lakers and some sign and trade teams like Miami and Rockets in the mix.

Klay's deal is not going to be good but they needed to pay him...he will miss atleast until feb/march next season and will take another year after that to get back to full speed. And the fifth year of these deals is rarely good....so expect 3 bad years.
Kemba's deal will be bad in year 4 and may be even year 3.

Teams entering salary cap hell: 76ers, Bucks, Warriors.
Boston would have to start paying their young players from next year. They drafted 3 players in first round and have another 3 picks coming next year.
Charlotte will have to start a complete rebuild. Grizzles have started a complete rebuild by trading away Conley and Gasol. Celtics have the Grizzles pick...top-6 protected next year and unprotected after that. |

Celtics had the 2nd best defense last year...they could slip a little with the loss of Horford but they will still be very good on defense. To be a true contender they would need Tatum or Brown to take the next leap on offense or Hayward needs to be back to Utah level. If Hayward is back to Utah levels...he will once again become a free agent after this season. |

Kemba wanted close to the super max 5 yr 230M from Charlotte....but he is taking 4 yr 140 from Celtics. He got voted to 3rd team all nba and that killed Charlotte. Now their 2nd best player is Jeremy Lamb who is also a free agent. That charlotte team is going to be ugly.
Kemba to Lakers would have been bad. They would have had bad defenders on 4 positions...with only AD being good. Kemba does two things well...creating offense and shooting...with Lebron and AD..offense creation will not be fully utilized.
I like Kemba's fit with Boston...Boston has one of the best defensive guards (Marcus Smart) and very good to above average defensive perimeter/forwards like Jaylen Brown, Gordan Hayward and Tatum. They can easily hide Kemba. The last year or two of his contract will likely be bad but they are replacing most of what Kyrie did with Kemba. Al Horford's loss will hurt...but he is 33 and they did not want to give him a big contract for another 4 years. Think they will be a #4 seed in east again. |

I dont think there is any issue moving forward. The lakers hate media is like crying on everything.

Its much harder to get above average perimeter players compared to bigs...they might try to bring back their core. |

I think they will take a look and he is really good but his game can decline in an year or two as he is 33.
The problem for Lakers is:
Lebron's best position is 4 and he can play some 3 or 5.
AD's best postiion is 5 and he likes to play 4
Horford can only play 4 or 5.
Both AD and Al are versatile and can pass, shoot and defend very well...so Lebron, AD and AL will work.
Kuzma is also a 4 (who is average but he plays well relative to this pay and experience)
If they use up the cap with Al, they will have to fill the guard rotation and perimeter defense with veteran minimum guys...I don't expect the crap management to figure this out and build a contender.
Kemba does not defend, very short guard that can decline any time and needs the ball in has hands to be effective...he is an ok shooter. With Lebron, he will become an over paid spot shooter than does not do anything else...but looks like that is is their plan |

As I wrote in my story, this is a massive haul for the Pelicans. The 2022 pick will likely be the "double draft," and then LeBron will be a free agent in 2022. Not unrealistic Pelicans are better in 2022-23. Then 2024 or 2025 could be a super valuable asset. Pelicans are loaded.

A clarification on the haul of draft picks heading the Pelicans' way. The 2021 pick goes to New Orleans if it's in the top eight, if not they'll get an unprotected first in 2022. Swap in 2023. Unprotected first in 2024, with a right to defer to 2025.
So, 2021 pick is reverse protected by Pelicans...its not Lakers protection. Lakers cannot miss play-offs between 2021 to 2025. |

Zion will be zion...
If you think about it... Randle, Hart, zo, Ingram are the Lakers team. And Alvin is pretty much from same school as Luke. So we can judge in hindsight in 2-3 years if Lakers won or pels won. |

If the door for contention out in the Western Conference swung wide open this week after a pair of brutal Golden State injuries, it appears that the Lakers just walked right through it.
Los Angeles, vying to make the most of LeBron James’s remaining window, agreed to a deal Saturday that would land them Pelicans star Anthony Davis in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and three first-round picks, including the No. 4 in Thursday’s draft.
The haul was significant from several standpoints: Aside from giving James his first real star running mate out in L.A. (the Lakers will undoubtedly go for one more in free agency), it also takes a couple of other teams out of the running for a serious overhaul. In particular, it’s a blow for a club like the Celtics, who might have been able to further entice free-agent-to-be Kyrie Irving into staying had they landed Davis. (The tea leaves on him staying haven’t looked great lately.)
The players involved in the trade, and that No. 4 pick, also suggest that the Pelicans have the makings of a very solid young roster under this new David Griffin regime. Between Zion Williamson (the presumed No. 1 pick), Jrue Holiday, Ingram, Ball, Hart and whomever New Orleans takes at No. 4, the Pels figure to be very good in transition, with considerable versatility on the defensive end. It’s not hard to see how this rebuild could pay dividends more quickly than what some were thinking —particularly if Williamson ends up being the kind of star he is widely expected to be. |

Iddariki issue was both played good in last year's play-offs...especially Tatum as a rookie...people expected them to have a steep improvement this year. But, both took a step back...especially Tatum was not at all good this year...possibly because teams paid more attention to them and Kyrie became 1st option on offense.
Brad Stevens gets players to over-perform...Issiah Thomas, Avery Bradley, Jae Crawder all playerd like stars under him and are nobodys before and after that. Ippudu Marcus Morris kooda same story...he was probably their 2nd best player this year. |

Brown is only good on defense. Brown is due for a big contract next year...appudu i don't see any surplus as he will be paid market rate...he becomes extension eligible on july 1st. Hayward coming of a major injury...it usually takes an year to be normal...he started looking good at the end of year..so i wont be surprised if he is back to Utah levels next year. He is good on offense: both passing and shooting and defense...hard to find those players. IF he is good again, he can opt out and become a free agent next year...Ainge gaadiki anni rakaaluga running out of luck. |

2020 is possible beacause...it looks like they trade this years pick after the draft. They will be selecting a player that Pelicans want at No4 and trade him in July. So, they can trade 2020...but then 2021 is not possbile...2022 cheyyali....Woj reporting they also agreed for pick swaps in those alternate years.

They would have become true contenders if they haven't traded D'Angelo Russel. Ippudu Laker fans dreaming about signing D'Angelo Russel to a max contract in free agency...aadu enduku vastaadu.
Brainless Zubac trade will also hurt the depth and the Mo Wagner pick looks bad and has no value. They desperately need shooters in the starting line up...their decision will be getting 2 or 3 good shooters using 30 M cap space or 1 star. Kawahi is a no-brainer for any team...beyond that Kyrie, Butler and Tobias Harris will be good. They should not sign Kemba. Kris Middleton or Brogdon will be great if Bucks are worried about maxing so many players.

I think Lakers gave up a bit too much especially Lonzo...but still worth trying for a title in Lebron's timeline. Celtics offer is not at all good.
Lonzo can become really good on the right team. Lakers killed the value of Ingram and Ball under Tragic. Ingram+Ball should have equal value to Tatum+Brown. Media gallu Tatum and Brown value over-hype chesaaru...and Celtics did not even offer Tatum in the deal. I doubt Ainge will even extend Brown before he hits restricted free agency.
No 4 pick is better than the future Memphis pick from Boston. Memphis pick has more variance (top-6 protected next year and unprotected in 2021)

Rahul:Hoping KD will be fine since his game is not based on explosion/speed or athleticism but on length and skill.
Hopefully we will get to see his prime once he is back.
He has been a top-3 player in NBA for the last 7-8 years...for that level of play everything has to be perfect. Even if he drops to being the 20th best player...basically the best player on a play-off team...thats still a big drop. |

The Washington Wizards are preparing to offer Toronto Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri a deal that could approach $10 million annually and deliver him the opportunity for ownership equity, league sources tell ESPN.
Wizards owner Ted Leonsis is expected to reach out to Toronto ownership soon to request formal permission to meet with Ujiri and offer a staggering financial package that would include running the Wizards' basketball operations and, perhaps, taking on a larger leadership role in the Monumental Sports and Entertainment company that oversees the Wizards and NHL's Capitals, league sources said.
Ujiri, who has two years left on his contract, is the architect of the first championship in Raptors history. He's responsible for building the Denver Nuggets into a contender and, now, the Raptors into a championship franchise.
Ujiri, 38, is also in the difficult position of needing to navigate this Wizards courtship as his franchise prepares to make its closing case to free agent Kawhi Leonard about staying with the Raptors on a long-term deal. |

One of the best free agencies begins...some franchise players and superstars in this class
Kawahi, KD(??), Klay, Butler, Tobias Harris, Kyrie
Very good players: Middleton, Brogdon, Al Horford, Marc Gasol, D'Angelo Russel, JJ Reddick, Cousins, Brook Lopez, Danny Green.
All of the top-5 teams have major free agents...with every teams looking like they loose 1 or 2 important players.
Sixers messed up their trades...they had a contender set for many years...now it will be hard to bring back their team. Bucks may loose 1 or 2 important players...they may have extended Bledsoe too soon...Brogdon and Middleton are their 2nd and 3rd best players
2020 will be an exceptioanlly bad free agent class...it will be Anthony Davis and some aging good players like Draymond Green, Iggy |

The Warriors believe Kevin Durant’s MRI on Tuesday will confirm a torn right Achilles’ tendon according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski.
Just awful. It's no secret that an Achilles tear is one of the worst injuries you can have in basketball and you've got to feel for Durant after fighting his way back to the court after a month-long absence. Durant, who will be 31 in September, could miss the bulk of the 2019-20 season if the MRI confirms Golden State's diagnosis. The track record of players coming back from this injury isn't great, but KD isn't someone to bet against. We expect him to attack his rehab and we wish him all the best. |

wow...the most devastating injury in sports...the comebacks from that are poor...nba history lo only Dominique Wilkins 3 decades ago was able to come back and play at a star level. this changes the whole league.
Lots of moral, ethical and financial questions...did they rush him because its a final elimination game..will the warriors still give him the 220 million max that they were going to offer him. who will they let go. |

It wasn't a fluke victory. Raptors won pretty convincingly.
steph had a pretty good game, and klay thompson had a mediocre one per his standards, but still scored 20. draymond/iguodola had bad offensive game, but they are not there for the offense
