Good question, the advantage with RothIRA compare to taxable account is that it's ERISA protected in some states :-) god forbid if someone sues judge cannot touch these accounts.
CA folks are out of luck as these accounts are not covered. |

sure. One thing though the key here is to do roth conversion immediately on the next day otherwise you will end up paying capital gains on the gains
for eg: $5500 deposit today
if you convert tomorrow, assuming there are no gains then there are no taxes
if you procrastinate and convert 1 year later and the amount appreciates to $6000 then you have to pay capital gains for $500 after conversion. |

Still be able to have roth ira even with income limit catch with two step process with backdoor rothira. The income cap on roth conversion is repealed. so to do this
- contribute to non-deductible ira.
- do roth conversion on the very next day after funds credited to the account
- file form 8606 while filing taxes |

You can withdraw 55 k penalty free we would have used for down payment and also have some monies in retirement
Imagine the same situation for kids college
