yes.. I got that.. but I don;t know they will hold the passport if we are out of the country for 4 to 5 months. Just want to make sure.. because you never know with the Indian consulates  |

Musicfan:Just apply online and go to India, you will not have any issues. It takes 3-4 months anyway to get initial process complete
But make sure even you get request to send the originals, dont send your/kids passport when there is a travel planned.

I just called CKGS and they told me that we can apply for OCI now and leave to India. And whenever we came back, we can send the passport to get the OCI card back. There is no time limit for this. We can send the passport even after 4 or 5 months. |

correct, they need only when they are done with first process. until then we can do it online from anywhere and send the documents thru mail.

this doest talk about PIO that is stamped for life long validity. There is no clarity. So better wait and check with embassy when clarity is there

There is lot of confusion and no clear understanding about this. I read some blogs and their version is different.
Some says, if you have valid PIO, Applying for OCI is not mandatory. But encouraging to apply for OCI. Some of the people traveled to India with their existing PIO card and they were allowed and not questioned. |

Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has communicated that all existing valid PIO cardholders (valid as on 30 September 2014, the date of notification of lifelong validity for a PIO card) are expected to apply for an OCI card in lieu of PIO card before 30 June, 2016.
