at the end of the day depends upon the kid
If he wants to become big fish in small pond ( local univ)
Or Small Fish in Big pond ( highly ranked Univ )
I know friends kids who did in Carnegie Mellon ( 1st rank school ) and purdue ( 18th rank ) both ended up in Microsoft with similar salaries. But cost wise Carnegie is almost double to carnegie..
This is what is making me think.

He applied private scholarships which he got around $4000
he was working in Kumon past 3 years which gave him around $7000 so finally he might have to manage one year as loan.,

he got into a Univ what is ranked 19 in US costing 200K, and this local university is 92 rank,, so he doesn't want to go here, even though its just 20K for entire 4 years.
Friends are saying invest money now for better future, am confused.

same philosophy here bro. however, my elder one worked during one summer (internship) and also did a 16 month co-op (between 3rd and final years) with another big company. between scholarships and money he saved with those jobs, I ended up paying very little. He attended local university and stayed home, that was a big plus financially. I will pay the 20% down payment for his first home, whenever he buys. He is moving out this weekend, got an apartment for rent. |

if I may, small suggestion. Whatever you were paying towards mortgage, commit that same amount towards some other asset. Lekapothe vachina money migaladu. I used to pay 50k/year towards mortgage at the end of it. After paying off mortgage, couple of years later venakki thirigi choosukunte Okka paisa ledu account lo.
