Bitcoin launched 13 years ago today—here are 8 milestones from the past year
Thirteen years ago today, bitcoin officially launched after what’s known as the Genesis Block was mined.
Though the bitcoin whitepaper was released by Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym used by bitcoin’s creator or creators, on October 28, 2008, many say its mint date of January 3, 2009 represents the cryptocurrency’s birthday.
Despite another ban from China, increased regulatory scrutiny and wild volatility, bitcoin had a record year in 2021 on many accounts. This past year marked the start of mainstream adoption for bitcoin with several firsts, including all-time highs in its price and hashrate, among other things.
Trust in bitcoin grew with the support of institutional and retail investors throughout 2021. Now the largest cryptocurrency by market value, bitcoin has become prominently known as a peer-to-peer financial system. Its supporters see it as a hedge against inflation, a digital gold and a viable currency.
But keep in mind that its critics still argue that bitcoin is a risky and speculative asset. Experts generally advise investing no more than you can afford to lose.
Here are eight bitcoin milestones from the past year.
1. Bitcoin surpassed $1 trillion in market value for the first time
On February 19, bitcoin hit $1 trillion in market value for the first time.
The milestone came after major institutional investors and notable financial companies began to support the cryptocurrency earlier in the year. Companies including Tesla, Square and MicroStrategy started to use their balance sheets to buy bitcoin.
2. Morgan Stanley offered wealthy clients access to bitcoin funds
In March, Morgan Stanley became the first big U.S. bank to offer its clients access to bitcoin funds, CNBC exclusively learned.
After its clients “demanded exposure to bitcoin,” the investment bank launched access to three funds that enable ownership of bitcoin.
3. El Salvador adopted bitcoin as legal tender
In June, El Salvador passed a new law to adopt bitcoin as legal tender, becoming the first country to do so.
The law allows bitcoin to be used as payment for goods and taxes in El Salvador. Businesses can price their goods in bitcoin, and exchanges will not be subject to capital gains tax, CNBC reported.
4. The first U.S. futures-based bitcoin ETF launched
In October, the ProShares futures-based bitcoin ETF made its market debut on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “BITO.”
The bitcoin futures ETF tracks contracts that speculate on the future price of the digital asset, rather than the current or “spot price” of the cryptocurrency itself. As a result, the prices of the ETF and bitcoin don’t necessarily match.
Nonetheless, the ProShares bitcoin futures ETF saw one of the “biggest first days on record for ETFs,” CNBC reported.
5. The price of bitcoin hit an all-time high
Just after the value of the entire cryptocurrency market surpassed $3 trillion in November, the price of bitcoin reached a new record.
On November 10, bitcoin hit an all-time high of over $69,044, according to CoinGecko.
6. The first bitcoin upgrade in four years activated
Taproot, a highly anticipated upgrade to bitcoin, also went into effect in November. It was bitcoin’s first major upgrade since 2017.
Taproot introduced what’s called Schnorr signatures, which help bitcoin transactions become more private and efficient, and less expensive. Most important, the upgrade better enables bitcoin to execute smart contracts, or collections of code that carry out a set of instructions on the blockchain.
7. 90% of the total bitcoin supply has been mined
As of December, 90% of the total bitcoin supply of 21 million has been mined, according to data from Blockchain.com.
The remainder is not expected to be mined until February 2140. Until then, miners can continue to earn bitcoins.
Bitcoin operates on a proof-of-work model, which means that miners must compete to solve complex math problems to validate transactions. It’s not an easy process — reaching the 90% milestone took 12 years.
8. Bitcoin’s hashrate hit an all-time high
On Sunday, bitcoin’s hashrate hit an all-time high of 203.5 exahashes per second, Decrypt reported with data from cryptocurrency statistics site BitInfoCharts.
Hashrate is a key metric when assessing blockchain strength. It represents the total amount of computing power used by miners to mint new bitcoins, but a higher hashrate also means that the network is stronger, more secure and resistant to potential attack. |

2. Alesia Haas, the CFO of Coinbase Global, will be among witnesses at the hearing, which will focus on "the challenges and benefits of financial innovation," according to the committee announcement.
3. Jeremy Allaire, the CEO of Circle, Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of FTX Trading, Chad Cascarilla, CEO of Paxos, and Dennelle Dixon, CEO of the Stellar Development Foundation, will also be witnesses at the hearing.
4. Also testifying will be Brian Brooks, the current CEO of Bitfury, who previously served as a top banking regulator under the Trump administration. As the acting Comptroller of the Currency, Brooks pushed forward several policies aimed at making it easier for banks to engage with cryptocurrency. |

Bitcoin climbs back above $57,000 as cryptocurrencies rebound from sell-off
1. Vijay Ayyar, head of Asia Pacific at cryptocurrency exchange Luno, said early reports that the new, heavily-mutated omicron Covid variant came with milder symptoms was giving the market a boost.
2. The world’s largest digital currency was briefly down more than 20% from its recent all-time high of nearly $69,000, officially entering bear market territory. Bear markets are typically defined by a decline of 20% of more from recent highs
3. “The global environment did add to the uncertainty across all risk asset classes as we saw last week, but the bounce back always shows us how strong the uptrend is, which is what we’re seeing here,” Ayyar said.
4. If bitcoin loses $48,000 to $50,000 on a daily or weekly basis, “that would definitely imply bearishness,” he added. But for now, Ayyar says “we’re still in bull market territory.” |

4. VanEck and ProShares both pulled their applications just two days after filing them, suggesting the SEC reached out to the issuers and indicated an ether futures fund was not likely to be approved, Seyffart wrote in a note on Tuesday.
5. But the fact that both companies’ bitcoin futures ETF filings, as well as those of several other firms, remain active is a positive for their prospects, according to Seyffart. He expects at least one bitcoin futures ETF to launch in the U.S. in the fourth quarter, perhaps as soon as October.
6. Many of those bitcoin futures ETFs were proposed after SEC Chairman Gary Gensler indicated recently that he would look more favorably upon bitcoin ETFs that only trade bitcoin futures contracts.
7. If eventual bitcoin futures ETFs are able to operate successfully, and open interest and volume in ether contracts continue to rise, Seyffart said he believes it won't be long before ether futures ETFs are approved by the SEC. |

2. The daily chart of Bitcoin shows an apparent resistance is coming up. The $51,000 level is crucial for the markets to break through, as that level was the significant S/R flip before the heavy crash occurred in May.
3. Given the significance of the $51,000 level, this area is the final hurdle before a big run toward the all-time high is likely to take place. If the $51,000 resistance breaks, a short squeeze to $57,000–$59,000 becomes likely. However, given the recent correction, a further corrective move is most likely going to happen.
4. The crucial level to watch for a potential breakdown is the entire region around $44,000. That level marked a new higher low in the current structure and is the most likely level to support the markets if a further and broader correction occurs.
5. Aside from the $44,000 level, the next level of support can be found around the $40,500 area, as that’s the previous high. Overall, the market shouldn’t be dropping beneath $37,500, as that’s the final breaker before new lows are on the table. For now, a rejection at the $51,000 resistance level may open the gates for more do.
6. Crucial support at $48,000 for Bitcoin on lower timeframes.The two-hour chart for Bitcoin shows a crucial level to sustain for the market to continue its upward trajectory. If the area at $48,000 doesn’t grant support, Bitcoin’s price will fall back into its previous range.
7. That previous range had ample support at the $44,000 area, and that’s most likely going to generate the next area of support for this entire correction. Nothing is for sure, but the moment Bitcoin loses $48,000, a cascade of stop/loss triggers could happen, which may result in a potential drop toward $44,000. |

Coinbase slammed for what users say is terrible customer service after hackers drain their accounts
1. Interviews with Coinbase customers around the country and a review of thousands of complaints reveal a pattern of account takeovers, where users see money suddenly vanish from their account, followed by poor customer service from Coinbase that made those users feel left hanging and angry.
2. Coinbase, which went public in April, has a market cap of about $65 billion, has more than 68 million users in 100-plus countries, more than 2,100 full-time employees and $223 billion in held assets, according to the company.
3. While the cryptocurrency exchange company has grown rapidly, complaints have continued to arise. Since 2016, Coinbase users have filed more than 11,000 complaints against Coinbase with the Federal Trade Commission and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, mostly related to customer service.
4. In a response to his frantic email, Coinbase told Ben his computer had been hacked and there wasn’t anything the company could do.
5. The CFPB responded to one of Ben’s ensuing complaints with an answer from Coinbase’s Regulatory Response Team. The email noted that transactions on the blockchain are irrevocable and said Coinbase’s insurance policy does not cover theft from individual accounts.
6. “There is no credible or supportable evidence that the compromise of your login credentials was the fault of Coinbase,” the message said. “As a result, Coinbase is unable to reimburse you for your alleged losses.”
Eventually, the company sent a $200 credit, telling Ben, “your Coinbase experience and your wait for a response to your formal complaint was not up to our standards.”
7. Experts say SIM swapping, where fraudsters seize control of a victim’s phone number and SIM card through their phone company, is to blame for many of the cryptocurrency thefts.
“The problem with SIM swapping and cryptocurrency is the moment you lose access to your cell phone, professional hackers will steal all of your money in less than 30 minutes,” said David Silver, an attorney who focuses on cryptocurrency.
8.Silver, whose firm represents the Vidovics, said the top complaints from potential clients are getting locked out of their cryptocurrency exchange platform account and SIM swaps.
“Most people who contact me would tell you it’s poor customer service,” Silver said. “They’re being almost victimized twice. Because they themselves have almost no ability to contact Coinbase and deal with them directly, they’re forced to retain professionals.”
9. Etay Maor, senior director of security strategy for cybersecurity company Cato Networks, said he’s seen cybercriminals on the dark web discussing how to break into accounts, including those of Coinbase users.
Once hackers break into Coinbase accounts, they put them up for sale on the dark web, according to Maor. He said while credit cards sell for a few dollars, hacked Coinbase accounts can sell for $100 to $150.
10. “When the attacker withdraws those funds from the exchange, that’s not a transaction that you can take back,” Ali Comolli, a management and program analyst at the FBI, told CNBC.

7. “The crazy part is that if monetary maximalism ends up playing out how I believe it will, bitcoin will eventually be incredibly stable in value. The price of goods and services will be denominated in bitcoin and the average bitcoin holder won’t see any level of volatility,” Pompliano wrote.

Bitcoin ‘whales’ jump back into market during cryptocurrency’s rebound to $50,000
1. Bitcoin “whale” activity has been tightly correlated to price action this year, with larger investors often acting as a “driving force” in the market, says Philip Gradwell, chief economist at Chainalysis.
2. Cryptocurrency accounts holding roughly $50 million or more worth of bitcoin have steadily increased their buying since the end of June, according to new data from blockchain firm Chainalysis. That bullishness continued into late August as prices rebounded above $50,000.
3. Bitcoin “whale” activity has been linked to price action this year. Those larger investors were a “driving force” in the market until late February, Gradwell said. As big investors acquire more digital assets, prices typically rise over 28 days. When they sell, prices fall, Chainalysis found.
4. From late June through Aug. 22, those large investors acquired the equivalent of nearly $10 billion at Tuesday’s prices. Whale holdings are now back at February levels, according to the data firm.
5. Bitcoin hit a three-month high this week, continuing a steady climb since mid-July. The value of the entire cryptocurrency market also crossed $2.2 trillion, after once again passing the $2 trillion mark earlier this month, according to data from Coinmarketcap.

DOGE foundation is revived and Vitalik is made as advisor..Doge is planning to introduce smart contracts ..Musk wallet (supposedly ) has over $1.5 billion worth of doge and still adding more regularly even during dump..If you have bought doge under 10 cents..holding for long term will be good. I am seeing no price movement in Doge has most of the investors are newbies who may have got carried away with Musk's pump ...they got burned after the crash and may not dare to invest again !

BlockFi, TaxBit Partner to Provide Crypto Reporting Tool for US Clients
High yield crypto lender BlockFi is teaming up with TaxBit to provide U.S. customers access to tax reporting tools.
“We’re always looking for ways to make it easier for clients to improve their financial planning, and we know that tax exposure can be a daunting task for crypto investors,” said Zac Prince, founder and CEO of BlockFi in a prepared statement.

Mike Novogratz's Galaxy Digital Rolling Out DeFi Index Fund
Galaxy Digital's new fund exposes investors to UNI, AAVE, COMP, and other Ethereum-based tokens.
Galaxy Digital, the crypto-centric investment management firm founded by Novogratz in 2017, announced today it has created the Galaxy DeFi Index Fund, giving traditional investors access to the most untraditional of digital currencies.
The Bloomberg Galaxy Defi Index on which the new fund is based exposes investors to nine Ethereum-based DeFi governance tokens: Uniswap, Aave, Maker, Compound, Yearn.Finance, Synthetix, SushiSwap, 0x, and UMA. The biggest weight, 40%, currently goes to Uniswap's UNI token, the largest DeFi token with a market cap of $15.5 billion, as of Wednesday.
Galaxy Digital already offers multiple cryptocurrency funds, including for Bitcoin and Ethereum; the Crypto Index Fund also mixes in Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and EOS. It boasts over $1.6 billion in assets under management. But the firm reported a $175 million Q2 loss this week, citing a "34% decline in overall digital asset prices and a 41% decline in the price of Bitcoin over the quarter." The DeFi fund represents an opportunity to diversify its product offerings.
The DeFi fund, open only to accredited investors (U.S. residents who earn over $200,000 a year), charges a 2% management fee and mandates that buyers keep their money in for 12 months (or pay a redemption penalty). That's likely a small price to pay for those uninitiated to the process of buying and securely storing cryptocurrencies. |

Crypto Made the Agenda at Last Month’s Fed Meeting

Wells Fargo on Thursday registered a private bitcoin (BTC, +3.81%) fund with U.S. regulators, becoming the latest mega-bank with an indirect crypto investment vehicle for its wealthiest clients.
NYDIG and FS Investments are partnering with Wells Fargo on the offering, according to regulatory documents; the pair have worked together on bitcoin funds before. Wells Fargo gets a cut of sales through two subsidiaries.
The new fund, FS NYDIG Bitcoin Fund I, LP, did not have any sales as of Thursday.
JPMorgan's passive bitcoin fund was also filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission Thursday. As CoinDesk previously reported, it is also a partnership with NYDIG. |

Investors are closely watching how correlated Nvidia’s business is to cryptocurrency prices.
Cryptocurrency revenue fell short of expectations, reporting $266 million in cryptocurrency card sales, more than 33% lower than expectations. Nvidia forecast in May that the dedicated chips it makes for mining cryptocurrency, called CMP, would have sales of around $400 million in the August quarter.

Robinhood Revenue Surges on Cryptocurrency Trades

More than $90 million in cryptocurrency stolen after a top Japanese exchange is hacked
Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Liquid said some of its digital currency wallets have been “compromised.”
Elliptic, a blockchain analytics company, said about $97 million in cryptocurrencies have been received by the hackers.

SlowMist said in a tweet that their researchers had “grasped the attacker’s mailbox, IP, and device fingerprints” and are “tracking possible identity clues related to the Poly Network attacker.”
The researchers concluded that the theft was “likely to be a long-planned, organized and prepared attack.”
DeFi has become a key target for attacks.
Since the start of the year until July, DeFi-related hacks totaled $361 million — an increase of nearly three times from the whole of 2020, according to cryptocurrency compliance company CipherTrace.
DeFi-related fraud is also on the rise. In the first seven months of the year, they accounted for 54% of total crypto fraud volume versus 3% for all of last year. |

More than $600 million has been stolen in what is likely to be one of the biggest cryptocurrency thefts ever.
Hackers exploited a vulnerability in Poly Network, a platform that looks to connect different blockchains so that they can work together.
Poly Network disclosed the attack on Twitter and asked to establish communication with the hackers urging them to “return the hacked assets.”
Once the hackers stole the money, they began to send it to various other cryptocurrency addresses. Researchers at security company SlowMist said a total of more than $610 million worth of cryptocurrency was transferred to three different addresses.
About $33 million of Tether that was part of the theft has been frozen, according to the stablecoin’s issuer.
Meanwhile, Changpeng Zhao, CEO of major cryptocurrency exchange Binance, said he was aware of the attack.
He said Binance is “coordinating with all our security partners to proactively help,” but that “there are no guarantees.” |

On Thursday, financial advisors were allowed to begin placing private bank clients into a new bitcoin fund created with crypto firm NYDIG, according to people with knowledge of the move. The fund is nearly identical to one NYDIG offers to clients of rival bank Morgan Stanley, said the people.

JPMorgan Launches In-House Bitcoin Fund for Wealthy Clients
1. The mega-bank has started pitching Private Bank clients on a passive bitcoin fund in partnership with NYDIG.
2. JPMorgan Chase began pitching its Private Bank clients on an in-house bitcoin fund for the first time this week
3. JPMorgan does not currently have a bitcoin ETF bid before the SEC, but nearly a dozen other firms do. Others are waiting with eagerness; Grayscale (a sister company to CoinDesk) is widely expected to convert its high-fee Grayscale Bitcoin Trust product to an ETF once the time is right.
4. NYDIG has also filed for a bitcoin ETF application, which the SEC has begun reviewing.
All wealth management clients of the bank recently gained the ability to access bitcoin funds such as GBTC through JPMorgan brokerage account, according to Business Insider. However, the new bitcoin fund is limited to customers of JPMorgan Private Bank. |

Crypto ‘Wild West’ Needs Stronger Investor Protection, SEC Chief Says
1. “We just don’t have enough investor protection in crypto. Frankly, at this time, it’s more like the Wild West,” Mr. Gensler said in prepared remarks to the Aspen Security Forum. “We have taken and will continue to take our authorities as far as they go.”
2. “If this innovation has any chance of surviving into the, you know, late 2020s and 2030s, it can’t stay astride of the public policy,” said Mr. Gensler, a veteran Democratic regulator who taught a course on cryptocurrency at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
3. In his speech Tuesday, Mr. Gensler highlighted a range of areas in which the SEC could expand its purview.
One of them is decentralized finance, or DeFi, software applications that allow users to borrow, lend, earn interest and trade assets and derivatives. Some DeFi developers say the technology shouldn’t face federal oversight because the automated programs aren’t controlled by people or companies and don’t hold traders’ assets. The services are often used by people seeking to borrow against their cryptocurrency holdings to place larger bets.
4. Investors have poured tens of billions of dollars into DeFi over the past 12 months, often seeking yields on their crypto assets far greater than they could achieve through dollar-based interest rates. The assets deposited as collateral with DeFi projects have swelled to $85 billion from around $3 billion a year ago, according to data provider DeBank. |

Bitcoin just got its first makeover in four years, which will help it compete with Ethereum
The first bitcoin upgrade in four years has just been approved by miners around the world. It’s called Taproot, and it’s due to take effect in November.
The upgrade will mean greater transaction privacy and efficiency – and crucially, it will unlock the potential for smart contracts, a key feature of its blockchain technology.
1.“Taproot matters, because it opens a breadth of opportunity for entrepreneurs interested in expanding bitcoin’s utility,” said Alyse Killeen, Founder and Managing Partner of bitcoin-focused venture firm Stillmark.

Right now, the cryptocurrency uses something called the “Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm,” which is created from the private key which controls a bitcoin wallet and ensures that bitcoin can only be spent by the rightful owner. Taproot will switch over to something known as Schnorr signatures, which essentially makes multi-signature transactions unreadable, according to Alejandro De La Torre, Vice President at Hong Kong-headquartered major mining pool Poolin
3.In practice, that means greater privacy, because your keys won’t have as much exposure on the chain. “You can kind of hide who you are a little bit better, which is good,” said Brandon Arvanaghi, previously a security engineer at crypto exchange Gemini.

Which of the following two statements bests describes bitcoin mining in China:
It represents the actions of individuals acting independently and anonymously, who just happen to live in China.
Even if the Chinese bitcoin miners aren’t explicitly part of a team, the Chinese government is aware of who they are and they could be induced (forced?) to collude with each other.
My question goes to the heart of one of bitcoin’s BTCUSD, +6.53% fundamental weaknesses. As you can see from the chart below, two-thirds of the world’s bitcoin mining power is based in China, which is a huge potential vulnerability for the cryptocurrency.
That’s because China potentially could mount what’s known as a majority attack, or a 51% attack, which would sabotage bitcoin’s integrity and possibly cause its price to plunge. As acknowledged on the bitcoin Wiki: “Bitcoin’s security model relies on no single coalition of miners controlling more than half the mining power.”
While Bitcoin has not suffered a 51% attack, that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen. Such attacks have not infrequently taken place with other cryptocurrencies, according to the MIT Media Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative. One of the biggest occurred in May 2018 with a cryptocurrency known as bitcoin gold, in which $72 million was stolen.
The standard comeback is that bitcoin is so large that a 51% attack would be prohibitively expensive. But, according to Eric Budish, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, state actors could have a geopolitical or financial terrorism incentive to sabotage bitcoin — in which case the cost of an attack might be acceptable.
A matter of trust
In truth, no one knows whether China could sabotage the bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin holders just have to trust that they couldn’t or they wouldn’t. There is much irony in this, since bitcoin supporters rally around the cryptocurrency’s alleged foundation on anonymous and decentralized trust. How is believing that China couldn’t or wouldn’t sabotage bitcoin different from trusting the Federal Reserve not to debase the U.S. dollar DXY, +0.09% ?
It hardly seems as though bitcoin has really solved the trust problem that fiat currencies infamously face. Trust in China is but one of the ways in which bitcoin’s champions haven’t really sidestepped the trust problem plaguing fiat currencies.
Most bitcoin transactions occur through exchanges, such as Binance, Huobi Global and Coinbase Global COIN, -4.27%. Such trading inherently relies on trusting those exchanges to do what they say they will. How is that different from trading with Bank of America or Goldman Sachs?
Many, perhaps a majority, of those who trade bitcoin don’t truly understand the technical details of how it operates. They therefore are relying on little more than blind trust that bitcoin will work as advertised.
Don’t be too sure that you are one of the few who understands bitcoin’s inner workings. I was quite taken in this regard by a comment made earlier this week by Joachim Klement, a trustee of the CFA Institute Research Foundation and the former head of the UBS Wealth Management Strategic Research team and head of equity strategy for UBS Wealth Management.
Klement has degrees in theoretical and particle physics, mathematics, economics and finance. And yet, he wrote to clients, “Whenever I try to understand cryptocurrencies I am at a loss. Either, I manage to translate the jargon into something in plain English at which point I often end up with trivial conclusions, or I am unable to translate the jargon and technical terms into something that makes sense.”
Claude Erb, a former commodities portfolio manager at TCW Group, draws a parallel between religious conviction and the trust and faith of bitcoin’s devotees. After all, he pointed out in an interview, no one has actually seen the bitcoin blockchain, and yet we have faith that it is all-knowing and benevolent. “Is that all that different from a belief in a ‘crypto God,'” he asks? “There are many leaps of faith required.” Erb likens bitcoin’s huge popularity to an “explosion in trust in a financial God, who may just be the man behind the curtain.”
Pointing out bitcoin user’s reliance on trust doesn’t mean that fiat currencies don’t also suffer from profound flaws. They do. Similarly, there are huge trust issues with banks and other financial institutions, as we abundantly saw in the Great Financial Crisis.
My point instead is that trust is required whether you use the traditional financial system or cryptocurrency. Be my guest if you want to use bitcoin. But please don’t claim that it doesn’t require as much blind trust as using the U.S. dollar, a bank or an investment firm. |

Brian Kelly, CEO of BKCM, pointed to firms in Asia such as BitMEX allowing 100-to-1 leverage for cryptocurrency trades. Robinhood does not allow traders to use margin for cryptocurrency, and Coinbase only allows it for professional traders.
Bitcoin traders liquidated roughly $12 billion in levered positions last week as the price of the cryptocurrency spiraled, according to bybt.com. This mass exodus wiped out about 800,000 crypto accounts.
Investors, both retail and institutional, have poured into bitcoin and other digital assets in 2021.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange — Coinbase —
said trading volume in the first quarter of the year was $335 billion, of which approximately $120 billion was retail and $215 billion was institutional.
Trading volumes totaled about $30 billion in the first quarter of 2020.
Crypto companies such as BlockFi and Celsius allow bitcoin holders to store their crypto with the firm, in exchange for an interest rate of between 6% and 8%.
On the back end, those firms lend bitcoin out to hedge funds and other professional traders. They also allow people to use their bitcoin holdings as collateral for loans. |

Bitcoin traders using up to 100-to-1 leverage are driving the wild swings in cryptocurrencies
Traders taking excessive risk in the bitcoin market being forced to sell when the price goes down were the bigger culprits for last week’s 30% drop in bitcoin prices, according to analysts.

Formation of Cryptocurrency Trading Team
I am pleased to announce the formation of the firm’s cryptocurrency trading team, which will be our centralized desk for managing cryptocurrency risk for our clients. The Crypto trading team will be a part of Global Currencies and Emerging Markets (GCEM), reporting to me, within the firm’s Digital Assets effort led by Mathew McDermott.
As part of our initial launch, we have successfully executed Bitcoin (BTC) NDFs and CME BTC future trades on a principal basis, all cash settling. Looking ahead, as we continue to broaden our market presence, albeit in a measured way, we are selectively onboarding new liquidity providers to help us in expanding our offering.
In addition, yesterday we launched our Digital Assets dashboard which provides daily and intraday cryptocurrency market data and news to our clients. We invite you to highlight the dashboard to your clients. For more information on trade approval and onboarding, contact the Digital Assets team.

1.According to Messari.IO's report, Dfinity has been working on Internet Computer since 2016 but has not yet publicly launched until last Monday, which gave it a surge up in the marketplace. COIN Earnings update from last evening:
1.Coinbase revenue tripled from last quarter as crypto prices skyrocketed
2. It also brought in $1.80 billion of revenue, up from $585 million in the fourth quarter of 2020 and $191 million a year ago.
3. The company’s net profit for the quarter was over $771 million, more than fourfold over Q4 2020′s figure of $177 million and more than 24 times higher than the year-ago quarter’s profit.
4. On the earnings call, the company said that it planned to list dogecoin in the next six to eight weeks. The meme-inspired cryptocurrency was up as much as 26,000% in the last six months
5. Roughly 94% of the company’s net revenue in the first quarter came from transaction fees from trading
6. Monthly transacting users more than doubled from the previous quarter, from 2.8 million to 6.1 million. Coinbase’s 56 million verified users

I don't follow LINK uncle.
I think nano should be top 10. as much as I love nano replacing btc eventually, not sure if BTC can be unseated to be honest as there is lot of institutional money and it's battle tested since 10+ years. nano has to go through the same attacks as it gains visibility and need to be able to withstand those. |

2. decentralization - the goal for crypto currency is to not have a central authority. good to research how a particular cryptocurrency's enables good decentralization. decentralization factor is measured in terms on nakomoto coefficient
3. spam resistant - most of the coins have fees which prevents bad actors to do spam because they have to pay a minor fee for each transaction. in case of nano there is zero fee, however with the upcoming release they are innovatively solving this problem
4. understand whether the crypto currency is proof of work or proof of stake or something. how do nodes/validators participate in consensus
5. understand who are competitors for a project, and what is your project advantages over them.
6. also regularly check for commits in github, participate in developer discussion, if possible run a validator yourself. if the code is private or if the team is not public they that's a big redflag.
I may be missing something else, but generally the above is true for any crypto.

Venmo users can now buy and sell bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies
1. Venmo will show users a new feature that lets them invest in four different cryptocurrencies with a minimum spending requirement of $1.
2. With more than 70 million users, Venmo is one of the most popular digital payment services in the U.S.
3.“No matter where you are in your cryptocurrency journey, crypto on Venmo will help our community to learn and explore cryptocurrencies on a trusted platform and directly in the app they know and love,” said Darrell Esch, a senior vice president and general manager of Venmo.
4. PayPal, meanwhile, has been ramping up its investments in crypto. Last month, the payments giant said it had agreed to buy Curv, a start-up that helps clients store their digital tokens securely, for nearly $200 million. It has also established a new business unit focused on blockchain, which Curv is set to join.
5. Venmo said its crypto feature was developed in partnership with blockchain infrastructure firm Paxos, which PayPal has also used for its other digital asset initiatives. PayPal was awarded a license to engage in crypto activities from New York regulators last year. |

Why Did Bitcoin Tumble and What Is the Outlook for Prices?
The Bitcoin rollercoaster is back. The cryptocurrency fell by as much as 15% Sunday with rival coins like Ether and XRP also plunging.
The retreat came after Bitcoin hit a record high of more than $64,000 Wednesday as the stock-market debut of the U.S.’s largest exchange for the tokens, Coinbase Global Inc., stoked enthusiasm for all things crypto.
While prices steadied on Monday with Bitcoin holding just below $57,000, that’s still down about 12% from last week’s intraday peak.
So what’s sparked the slide?
1. Regulation fears
On Friday, the Turkish central bank said it would ban their use as a form of payment from April 30 and would prohibit companies that handle payments and electronic fund transfers from processing transactions involving crypto platforms.
2. Overexcitement
Any big rally offers potential for the market to get ahead of itself.
That’s the view of Galaxy Digital founder and long-time crypto bull Michael Novogratz, who wrote on Twitter he sees the retreat as a healthy correction.
3.Idiosyncratic factors
Other things could be adding to the mix. Industry news site CoinDesk reported Saturday that power outages in parts of China had knocked out a significant amount of Bitcoin mining capacity, which reduced the overall processing power of the cryptocurrency’s network.
How significant are the drops?
Given the frequent warnings from mainstream financial figures of a speculative mania in cryptocurrencies, any substantial drop reawakens memories of the 2017 crash. Back then, Bitcoin fell from more than $19,000 to under $4,000 by the end of 2018.
While the current retreat is notable, it’s not on that scale. Bitcoin is still 93% higher than it was in January. Volatility is routine for the asset class: the 15% intraday drop on Sunday was only the biggest since February.
Ether, which fell as much as 18% before closing 9.4% lower on Sunday, is up more than 200% this year. |

After a bitcoin crackdown, China now calls it an ‘investment alternative’ in a significant shift in tone
Li Bo, deputy governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) called bitcoin an “investment alternative.”
In 2017, China cracked down on cryptocurrency trading and so called initial coin offerings (ICOs).
“We regard Bitcoin and stablecoin as crypto assets ... These are investment alternatives,” Li Bo, deputy governor of the PBOC, said on Sunday during a panel hosted by CNBC at the Boao Forum for Asia.
“They are not currency per se. And so the main role we see for crypto assets going forward, the main role is investment alternative.”
As investment alternatives, “many countries, including China, are still looking into it and thinking about what kind of regulatory requirements. Maybe minimal, but we need to have some kind of regulatory requirement to prevent ... the speculation of such assets to create any serious financial stability risks,” Li said.
Li’s latest comments highlight a potential shift in tone from the PBOC.

Shares of several cryptocurrency-related companies soared on Tuesday as Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) posted a major recovery from a low of $49,506 on Monday to trade at $54,566.20 at press time.
What Happened: Bitcoin equipment manufacturer Canaan Inc (NASDAQ:CAN) shares closed 50.45% higher at $28.69 and rose 3.87% to $29.80 in the after-hours session.

Colorado-based Riot Blockchain Inc (NASDAQ:RIOT) jumped 33.81% in the regular session to $52.16 and rose 5.16% to $54.85 in after-hours trading. Riot is focused on BTC mining.
Ebang International Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:EBON) announced intent to foray into Litecoin (CRYPTO: LTC) and Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) mining late last month. The company’s shares rose 26.16% to $7.09 and rose another 4.94% in after-hours trading to $7.44.
Uniloc subsidiary Marathon Digital Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MARA), a cryptocurrency mining firm, ended the regular session up by 28.97% at $36.77. The company’s shares rose 3.48% to $38.05 in the after-hours session.
Bitcoin miner Bit Digital Inc’s (NASDAQ:BTBT) shares closed 30.54% higher at $15.90 and rose 6.29% in the after-hours trading to $16.90. The company removed its CEO Min Hu for non-participation in mining operations last month.
Shares of Chinese digital media services provider Airnet Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ANTE), which gave Unistar Group Holdings a 19% stake in exchange for the delivery of 500 computer servers designed to mine cryptocurrency last month, shot up 27.90% to $3.53. After-hours, the shares saw a further gain of 4.82% to $3.70.
Why It Matters: BTC has returned 88.22% on a year-to-date basis, while Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) has returned 146.69%. ETH traded 1.76% lower at $1,806.67 at press time.
ARK Investment Management CEO Cathie Wood said Tuesday that cryptocurrencies may gain a place in recommended portfolios for everyday investors akin to fixed-income investments.
Corporate investors are already making a beeline to invest in cryptocurrencies. This week, the Chinese beauty app Meitu purchased 15,000 ETH worth $18.96 million.
Last month, Jack Dorsey-led Square Inc (NYSE:SQ) piled on 3,318 BTC worth $170 million after first buying $50 million worth of BTC in October.
Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy Incorporated (NASDAQ:MSTR) have purchased BTC worth $1.5 billion and $2.17 billion respectively. |

crypto consensus generally two types
PoW - proof of work - bitcoin, litecoin etc falls into this category. essentially a set of transactions are grouped into a block and miners on the network solve puzzles to add the block to the BTC chain. whoever solves fast will usually get the block reward. in case of BTC whether or not there are transactions there is a block generated every 10mins. and each block releases 6.25 new BTC as mining reward. to solve the puzzles fast there by to get the mining reward, mining pools (groups of computers) are formed. in 2010-2013 time frame you can solve the puzzles using your laptop, now it is no longer the case. you have to be part of a pool to solve it and you will get a portion of the reward
PoS - proof of stake - this is the second popular consensus. in this case there are nodes called validators in the network whose responsibility is to validate the transcations. any one can technically be a validator, but they have to have weight (voting power) to be able to vote on transactions. the amount of weight (voting power) a validator is directly proprtional to the weight staked to this validator. in order to earn staking rewards you either can become a validator and stake your ethereum to your own node or you can stake it to a reputable node (kraken, binance etc.). you will get a commission for loaning your ethereum to vote transcations. |

Yes. Exactly. Bitcoin was innovation & testing waters in New field kind of project. Satoshi should be commended for creating alternative currency ( electronic number ) for all day to day transactions & trades.
They have spinned off litecoin to solve the exact same problem and would pickup along with crypto usage. In my opinion even bitcoin ni kuda koncham koncham penchutharu ( even though, not at same levels of initial spike ), mainly because its mother of all inventions in crypto/alternative currency field.

2018 feb loo bitgrail ani exchange hack iyyindhi uncle...almost 17million nano hacked....bad press saying that it was hacked because of the protocol which is not the case. recently there was verdict from the italian court that the hack has nothing to do with the protocol
on top of it - no big name backers, which is good and bad. however nano has very strong community support, check $nano on twitter and r/nanocurrency...
one challenges nano have is spam prevention, since transacations are essentially feeless any bad actors can bring down the network with enough power.....currently it's being discussed and implemented.
for anyone new to crypto - bitcoin is bad first experience in many ways currently (transaction speeds, fee to transact, energy consumption to mine blocks etc.). nano pretty much solves all of this. it's also fully distributed, so technically no inflation at all....

How coinbase was started?
Like many within this select circle, Ehrsam seemed perfectly poised to adopt the new digital world. He played video games professionally in high school, then studied computer science at Duke University before becoming a foreign-exchange trader at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in New York. Yet he grew bored at the bank and as he looked for things that interested him after work, he discovered Bitcoin through a Georgetown professor’s blog. He was instantly fascinated.
“I would literally trade Bitcoin in the bathroom on my phone at Goldman,” Ehrsam said in an interview. Bitcoin was going for about $6 at the time, compared with a record $58,000 last week. Back then, the main way to buy it was on the now bankrupt exchange Mt. Gox or through intermediaries, and Ehrsam realized there needed to be an easier way to buy and sell crypto.
After meeting Armstrong on the Bitcoin subreddit forum, they started Coinbase in 2012 out of an apartment in San Francisco. Armstrong declined to comment.
Morehead remembered the early days of Coinbase as he was creating the Pantera Bitcoin fund in 2013. He’d been an investor for a while, taking huge macro risks on things like Russian privatization and farmland in Argentina, bets with very steep downside potential but that could also pay off enormously if successful.
“I was first attracted to Bitcoin as an investment, it was something really interesting to learn about,” Morehead said. In 2013, however, amassing a large stake in the new digital currency wasn’t easy.
“I sent $2 million to Coinbase, and I started trying to buy $2 million of Bitcoin,” Morehead said. “My daily trading limit was $50.” Pantera has grown into one of the largest holders of cryptocurrencies and has invested in over 50 startups, including Circle, Bakkt, Polychain Capital, Shapeshift and Zcash, according to its website.
In the early days, though, Morehead had to contend with the drugs and criminals narrative that dogged Bitcoin. He went to every major university endowment in 2015 when Bitcoin was at $100 to tell them they should have it in their portfolio.
“The conversation was all Silk Road, drugs, whatever,” he said, referencing the early black-market exchange shut down by U.S. authorities.
That dark element to Bitcoin didn’t deter Wilson at Union Square and DCG’s Silbert, both of whom were series A investors in Coinbase. The company’s shares changed hands in recent private transactions at levels that would value Coinbase at close to $100 billion, a person familiar with the matter have said.
Union Square has focused its cash on about 15 firms in two main areas, infrastructure providers like Protocol Labs and Helium and in other crypto investment funds like Polychain Capital and Autonomous Partners. Wilson declined to comment. |

Already proven ETH & BTC (if you can afford) most likely will grow proportionate to Crypto Currency usage over a period of time....
Govt Regulations, Global Bank Regulations due to competition from Fiat currency, "ease of use of Crypto currency / mass adoption" would only be the hurdles for Crypto growth.
LiteCoin ( Efficient Bitcoin ) &
ChainLink ( Smart contracts Code executor, EcoSystem of Data Extractor for dapps ) are couple of other options to consider.....
With heavy adoption of Crypto currency going forward ( as crypto scales upwards exponentially ), transaction performance would play critical role and supporting transaction performance with heavy investment in Hardware wouldn't scale well i suppose. So Bitcoin may face some hurdles when compared to Litecoin.

All you have to do is ...
Step 1: Go to the uniswap website
Step 2: If you are create a new wallet and connect your metamask/coinbase(wallets)
Step 3: metamask ki kuda appude open chesukondi ... seed isthaadu 12 words....write them down in a paper ...do not take screenshots or type it in your laptop
Step:4 Once you setup everything, take ETH address from Metamask and send ETH from your Coinbase
Note: Gas fees are very very high in Uniswap ....
For example idhe thread lo cheppaanu 400$ tho Coinbase lo start avuthe ...kaavalsina coin konesariki 320$ vachindhi
