The Union home ministry has advised against creation of a separate state for Telangana, warning the government that such a decision would create huge surge of demands from elsewhere which will be very difficult to contain. In a note sent for the consideration of the cabinet committee on parliamentary affairs about a week ago, the home ministry, said sources, has suggested that from security perspective creation of a Telangana state should not be considered. After convening the much-awaited all-party meeting on the contentious issue on December 28, Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde had said that a decision would be taken within a month. “I have heard carefully from all the parties. I will brief the government on the outcome .... Within one month, there will be a decision,” he had said. Sources said that the note, drawn up and vetted by top officials, virtually warns that if such a decision is taken, it would create huge surge of demands from elsewhere, which will be very difficult to contain and can lead to huge security implications, especially in the northeast region and areas like Gorkhaland in Darjeeling hill state region that can have geopolitical ramifications because of being close to international borders with China, Nepal and Myanmar. “The choice is between containing a localised agitation and rushing to contain several agitations spread across various states, including sensitive regions from the security point of view. The wise choice would be to contain a single localised agitation,” top government sources said. Reports to the Union government have already warned that political groups in several regions such as Bodoland in Assam, Cooch Behar and Gorkhaland in West Bengal are keenly following the Telangana issue and waiting for the announcement to start their movements afresh. Besides, such a decision will give rise to several more insurgencies related to separate statehood demands from unexpected quarters like Harit Pradesh, Bundelkhand and Purvanchal in Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha in Maharashtra. A delegation of about 20 MPs and MLAs from Seemandhra and about 40-odd leaders of non-gazetted government employees union under an ad hoc Samaikyandhra Political Joint Action Committee met Shinde on Monday to convey their opposition to creation of a separate Telangana state. space for lease
