http://www.opposingviews.com/i/politics/meet-4-year-old-mayor-robert-tufts-dorse t-mn http://www.digtriad.com/news/watercooler/article/284216/176/4-Yr-Old-Mayor-Runs-Dorset-MN-Like-Clockwork ---------------------------------------- The town of Dorset, Minnesota, with a population of 22, boasts the youngest politician around as its newest mayor. Mayor Robert Tufts, also known as Bobbie, is just four years old. The 4-year-old became mayor when the town picked his name out of hat. Each year Dorset pulls the name of a citizen out of hat and that person becomes mayor for a year. Mayor Bobbie keeps the small community near Park Rapids on its toes. “He’s amazing. He’s just completely amazing,” said Kathy Schmidt, whose family has lived in the area for four generations. “He’s right in your face and well-spoken. You can’t imagine what a ball of fire he is.” The mayor is a singer, dancer, and expert fisherman. A fisher of crappie, muskies and bass, Mayor Bobbie says leeches and worms are the best bait. He appears to chew on fishing corks in his interview - perhaps a secret to his success. The mayor says he has but one girlfriend, the first lady Sophia. Dorset is about a century old, coming together as a railroad passed through the area. Years ago it lost the status of “town” said Schmidt, “when they took away the zip code.” Decisions in the town are made by local businesses, so there isn’t much for a mayor to do. Dorset calls itself the “Restaurant Capital of the World” because it allegedly has more restaurants per capita than anywhere else. The population, 22, varies depending on who you talk to. “It depends on how many children the preacher has,” Schmidt laughed. |
