The Supreme Court's landmark ruling that the MPs and MLAs will stand disqualified from the date of conviction in a trial court has created ripples in the political circles in Andhra Pradesh. The question being asked is how far the ruling will affect the political career of the jailed YSR Congress Party President and Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. If a trial court finds him guilty in any of the cases brought forward by the CBI, he will stand disqualified and cannot contest future elections. The earlier provision in the Representation of the People's Act allowed a convicted lawmaker to remain in office till the disposal of his or her appeal in a higher court. In a far-reaching ruling, the Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down this flexible legal provision that protects a lawmaker from disqualification even after conviction in a criminal case by a lower court. The Supreme Court ruled that MPs or MLAs shall stand disqualified from holding the membership of the house from the date of conviction in a trial court. This ruling could see several lawmakers in both Parliament and state assemblies lose their seats. The immediate impact will be felt in the ongoing CBI case against Jagan. Already, the YSR Congress Party has been alleging that the case was politically motivated to block his career, erase YSR legacy and defame his family. The YSR Congress Party leaders fear that CBI could manipulate the case in such a manner that it can extract conviction from a lower court at least in one of the charge sheets filed against the MP. If the apex court ruling comes into effect, it would severely impair Jagan's political growth in the event of a conviction from a lower court. This is really a matter of worry for his party leaders and his countless fans and well-wishers. jagannana farishtithi eeti, incase kindha court loo convict ani thelisthe... aa bongulo signature le...
