Kids ki education okkate lekkesthunnaru, if you need to give them a grand wedding that costs a ton too!
I had done my calculations 2 years back and this thread reminded me to search for that spreadsheet in my lappy! I had been a saver all my life, need to see if I can still accomplish my financial goals. They still seem to be pretty steep.

Sam:in 1995, my father gave me 2500Rs. after I am done with my diploma (polytechnic) and going to Hyderabad for job search... he told me to save last 200Rs for return bus ticket.. if you don't find a job before you spend this money.. you come back and help me with cultivation.. and I believe, that motivated me to find a job and with just diploma and no additional qualification I found a job that pay Rs1200 per month for 12hr day with only Sunday off.. just enough for me to survive in Hyderabad and I survived..... that time I knew people with BSC comp. and MSC Comp, BE.. searching for jobs desperately in Hyd..

ikkada maa vaadi university fee for Engg vachi about $14k per year. based on his marks from 10th to 12th, he got $3,750 in scholarships and $2,100 from my company (they give every U going kid $2,100/year up to 4 years). Overall burden for me in terms of fee net scholarships and my company contribution is about $44k.
I will make him work 3 summers (if he does't opt for co-op program) starting next year; each summer for 4 months. normally we pay about $22 - $25 per hour depending on which year the student is in. Students will earn approx $14k per summer. So almost covered the fee.

irrespective of the parents capability the kids should be given an opportunity to learn the value of earning bread for him as early as possible.. that thrills them and make them a better human IMHO...

I am not saying we should do the same to our children but we should give them opportunity to try not spoon feed them.. what we save is all for them, after all .. we are not going to abandon them with their education debt.. we will eventually pay if they are in trouble or they will eventually use our savings for a different establishment.. If we offer them before hand .. I think that is nothing but denying them the opportunity to learn and understand the society... |

first in India we don't have an option to work.. and the education also not that expensive.. say for example single parent working.. with 100K.. might save 1K per month.. that is 12K year.. you need approx 25yrs of saving per on kid.. that is impossible to cover..
where as in India.. middle class family would save 1L-2L per year.. and that is 2-3yrs of savings at max per kid...
In USA since we have an option to work and make money.. that should be utilized or like most our people are now going to India for engineering.. that 4-5yrs time... that way you are not in financial slump when you are old.. kids can do MS here and jump start their career... |

Ex: 100k salary vunndu ee roju retire ayithe, oka 60k per annum income raavali dead ayye varaku. 60k per annum generate (then you have increase that yearly amount to accommodate inflation) cheyyalante entha capital vundali and what rate of return assume cheyyali; ittantivanni depend on risk appetite of each individual. |
