You can do backdoor ira to roth ira anytime and any number of times. I suggest one time per year for tax record purposes.
Yes, you can convert your ira to roth ira and there is no penalty involved. However, you have to pay taxes on capital gains ONLY. Wrt transfer-in-kind (as is funds), I highly doubt it will work that way unless your brokerage allows it and you shell out taxes on gains from out of pocket.
TO avoid taxes on gains, I contribute one day and very next day I convert to RothIRA so that there is only couple of cents gains and hardly any taxes on that cents.
You can search backdoor roth ira and there is tonns of info. Don't get confused with Mega backdoor roth ira which slightly different. |

anthe we can only do it once kadha appudu... I have a traditional IRA . I have been contributing since 2017. i also have Roth IRA since sam period of time. Can i roll over my traditional to Roth ... i mean transfer funds and positions to it by paying penalty ?

backdoor roth ira can be 0 taxable event. You open a traditional ira and convert to roth ira same day. The only thing is to make sure that you do not have any other tradtional/rollover iras at the time of doing this event. |

Traditonal 401Ks rolled over to IRA when I change the jobs so that I don't need to pay any taxes at the time of rolling over. Not sure if my explanation makes sense or not. |
