World markets extend downside momentum overnight
1. The global equity markets have extended losses following the late day weakness in the US. S&P Futures are down about 0.9% to trade around the 4088 area. The pressure has been ongoing since the beginning of the Asian session. Early buying stalled out at 4123.00. The low currently resides at 4084.00.
2. In Asia, China lost 0.5%, while Japan dropped over 1%. The Shanghai suffered after the state accused the US of threatening the peace after a warship passed through the Taiwan Strait. The potential tension left investors with apprehension.
3. In Japan, increasing coronavirus numbers weighed on traders' spirits. Toyota finished about 1.5% lower after the automaker indicated it would shut down production at two plants in June due to the global chip shortage.
4. In Europe, the major bourses are retreating in tandem with rest of the world. Semiconductors remain in focus with stocks such as ASM and Infineon falling over 2%. Commodity-related names are losing ground with weakness in energy and metals. As such, Antofagasta, Glencore, BP and Royal Dutch Shell are down 2-3%. |

Market Briefing: Still stuck in consolidation mode
1.There has been a shift in the trading tone today, as growth stocks are pushing ahead while value stocks are moving in reverse. Neither factor, though, is moving to any great degree.
2.Still, it's a stretch to say there is a lot of conviction at the moment. The market's own fickle behavior -- down one day, up the next; value leads one day, growth the next -- has perhaps been a turn off to market participants, who are choosing to focus on other pursuits for the time being as the market remains in consolidation mode.
3.The S&P 500, at its current level, is essentially flat versus a month ago when the better-than-expected Q1 earnings reports were hitting in droves. Today is a microcosm of the same action.
4.Walmart (WMT 142.05, +3.16, +2.3%), Home Depot (HD 316.89, -3.12, -1.0%), and Macy's (M 19.34, +0.19, +1.0%) all reported much better-than-expected results and provided reassuring guidance, yet the broader market has been unmoved by their reports.
5.The "stall factor" is apt to be pinned in part on a weaker-than-expected Housing Starts report for April that played into the "peak growth" narrative. |

Market Briefing: Lack of willing buyers
1. The stock market is on its heels in the early going, suffering from a lack of leadership and a general lack of buying interest.
2. Given the rally seen over the last two sessions, today's start is apt to be disappointing for many, yet it's largely indicative of a market that remains in consolidation mode.
3. Given that, the growth stocks are once again bearing the brunt of the early losses. Their weakness is being linked in part to inflation pressures and worries that those pressures will ultimately drive up long-term rates that will compress valuations.
4. That might be the subtext today, yet it would be remiss not to mention that the Treasury market isn't necessarily reflecting those inflation worries to any great extent -- not today anyway. The yield on the 10-yr note is unchanged at 1.64%.
5. Accordingly, one can make a case that today's weakness is owed primarily to a lack of willing buyers than it is to any specific news catalyst. |

I am Buying More of This Badly Beaten Stock
I have about 10 stocks that are in my ten year hold. One of those stocks have taken a big beating over the past 2 months. However, I think this stock has bottomed and it is ready to move much higher. That stock? Marathon Digital Holdings (MARA).
Usually I like to talk about stocks hitting new highs. These stocks offer some nice short term gains. However, finding stocks at a great discount is the opportunity to make such gains. Simply look at GameStop and AMC. Now, I think the price of Bitcoin has hit a bottom and will begin to move significantly higher. This will send bitcoin mining stocks much higher. My number bitcoin mining choice if Marathon.
I like Marathon because it is based in North America, their long-term energy control, their over 200,000 ant miner capability and large number of Bitcoin on their books.
This is a long-term hold for me so I am not concerned by price target. However, I know some art interested. Therefore, I think that a $100 price target is not out of the realm of possibilities for the end of the year. |
