Mahesh is the prince of Tollywood, but princes too have to prove why they deserve their throne from time to time. And things haven’t worked in favour of Mahesh as his past two films flopped miserably at the box office. Of course, he did believe in 1-Nenokkadu and expected it to work at the box office as he expected the new generation of Telugu audiences to take to a different genre. However, the Telugu audiences showed that irrespective of where they lived, they loved their formula films, where the hero is larger than life and played the savior. So, after two duds, Mahesh learnt his lessons and struck back with a vengeance. Well, he did his homework along with wife Namrata, who herself has been an actress and a former Miss India, well aware of the market dynamics. And together, they successfully marketed the film in such a way that the Telugu audiences would like it. But the core strength and the biggest success of Srimanthudu lies in the fact that it has become a stupendous hit at a time when Baahubali continues to draw audiences to theatres. Now, when you compete with a film that has been a huge success at a pan-Indian level and a film that has grossed Rs 500 crores, all languages put together, getting a super hit from the word go is an achievement in itself. Another biggest change from his earlier films has been the way Mahesh and team have promoted the film, without actually resorting to ‘on your face’ kind of publicity that has become the norm even for little known films. Now, Mahesh had two reasons to go ahead with the decision. For starters, his 1-Nenokkadine had boomeranged and secondly, Mahesh tuned a producer with Srimanthudu. Naturally, the stakes were high and he had to get his act right this time. The team strategically decided to do away with pre-release publicity and refrained from creating any hype. Of course, Mahesh and the entire cast did give personal interviews to all media, but that was as per their schedule which meant that they set aside a month for all promotions prior to the release date. So, the audiences went into theatres with zero expectations or minimal expectations. And this was the trump card for Koratala Siva. His story which actually tells the story of the ‘multi-millionaire’ hero which has now become a favourite with Telugu audiences coupled with the message of adopting and loving one’s village and family worked well at the box office. Another calculated move that worked in favour of the film is the release date. Though Srimanthudu was supposed to release in July, they moved the release to August and made way for Baahubali. And this totally worked in the film’s favour. Now, a month later, Baahubali hasn’t impacted the collections of Srimanthudu and Mahesh has proved that he has it in him to make a film work without the usual thrills and frills. Given that Baahubali is the exact opposite and is a fantasy film did not mar the collections despite low-key publicty. In fact, it helped Srimanthudu, as the audiences got to see two big films back to back and they simply loved the variety on offer. Since Srimanthudu is now being seen as a huge success story in terms of how a film can be sold to Telugu audiences, the team is now preparing to tour the two Telugu-speaking states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to share their joy with their fans and of course to promote the film. - See more at: http://www.greatandhra.com/movies/movie-news/why-srimanthudu-worked-despite-baah ubali-68304.html#sthash.Z1zZX5H6.dpuf |
