Kalikaalam:
Basically Hindu's believe that what comes to earth that comes as combinations of 5 elements, should go back to earth. The only way is to burn it rather than bury. The body shouldnt have any remains so that the soul doesnt seek back and feel the tendency to see whats happening and relieve the complete attachment to the body. The reason why we do the early Karmas and monthly karmas for the reason is that the soul doesnt get assigned to another body immediately. It takes some times many many years before even getting another body. The reason for that is that based on the balance sheet of papa/punya, you will fit into something and that should be available to take you. I mean if you are taking birth to a parent, then those parents should be ready to conceive you. if you are destined to be a child of a parent, your wait time is depending upon when once leaves one body and when parents are ready. This relation is caused by runanu bandham. Then why do we need to do monthly. The time they take to a plane which they wait for next assignment is one calendar year as per earth. The strength required for them to sustain in this plain is supplied thru pinda pradanam, the food, the sesame seeds and water. Once this is complete the yearly rituals are needed for the betterment of the soul so that they can get some of their issues caused due to their sins minimized and also we need to provide gratitude to the elders and their above generations as the basic reason for our existence is due to their existence of them. If they are not there, we are not there. I mean we would have to wait for infinite time without replenishing out papa/punya. we should do rituals for elders as long as we are alive as to show the gratitude and for their appeasement so that they can bless us. Thank you so much.If possible can you answer the following questions? (1)any significance for cremation rather than burial? Any reason why they don't cremate sanyasis?
Musicfan:Most of the rituals are meant to liberate the soul properly from the body and earth.
(2)If they don't do these rituals say 'andha preta', what is they believe is going to happen? (3)How long the soul takes time to enter into another body? How many yearly one should do sradha karmas (yearly rituals)one has to do for their parents? (4)What is the point of following rituals every year when the soul anyway goes into another body soon? sorry.these questions are not out of my atheist mind, just want to give my daughter as much info as possible so that she will compare and contrast with other customs. Thanks again. |

Kalikaalam:
Most of the rituals are meant to liberate the soul properly from the body and earth. The tying of rope to toes, is to ensure the Muladhara is closed properly so that the soul doesn't come back in. The going around the pyre 3 times there are many explanations for this, not sure which one is right but logically all seems fine. When you do a pradakshina your focal point is the center and your thoughts go around that. So here you pray for the proper departure. Then they say one chants mantras while going around for the liberation of the soul to Kala Bhairava and Yama. So that they take care of the departed. Another version is all the sins done thru thoughts, talk and actions should not be attached to the soul so that the punishments might be minimal. There is something that few break the Kapala either directly or symbolically by breaking sticks, as the thru kapala its guaranteed liberation. The body is layed down on floor as it is said that it has to be on earth to be part of panchabhoota again. The breaking of matti kunda with water symbolizes the job of the body for the soul is done and the five elements that comprises the body are perished. Brucelee Audio Review
